Yosemite National Park - March 2025
This trip was long in the making. I’d been to Yosemite with family a few times, and would sneak away when I could to take some photos, but had never gone myself. I booked two nights in the campground in the beginning of March in the hopes that I would still get some winter scenes playing out in the valley. At the day approached, I saw that I might be getting more than I bargained for as a massive winter storm was bearing down on the valley. After waffling, I decided that I would still go. So I packed my cold/wet gear and headed out. The first day I was there, it was in the 30’s and raining, with photo conditions pretty bare, so I spent the day scouting and sight seeing, getting whatever shots I could.
But the rain turned to snow overnight and the park was transformed into a winter wonderland. Since I’d originally not been planning to do sunrise anywhere (my chosen location was best an hour after daybreak), I thought I’d sleep in. But FOMO got the best of me and I headed up to Tunnel View for the first of two trips that day. I was greeted by a brilliant scene of clouds and fog, and after getting set up and taking a few pictures, a fog bank rolled up the Merced River Valley and totally obscured the view.
From there I spent the rest of the day both running to, and from, the banks of fog wrapping the granite cliffs for one of the best photo trips that I’ve taken in a long time, if ever.
